It might have been rabbit proof once, but not today.
Times have change from when rabbits around Australia were an uncontrollable pest and fences like this one along with 1080 poison, warren ripping and even explosives were desperate measures.
Rabbits are still around but the Calici-vitrus, introduced in Australia in the 1990s has had some success but its potency is waning.
Interestingly, the lines that can be seen in the middle ground of this photograph are the familiar sedimentary lines so often visible along the tops of the hills and mountains of the Flinders Ranges.
I guess that once they would have been quite pronounced, but time and weather have worn them almost away.
The fence and the peaks are on Angorichina station near the town of Blinman.

Hi Peter rabbits are becoming a real nuisance again because subsequent generations are becoming immune to calici and mixy viruses. The rabbits are undermining bridges, railway lines and also houses but unbeknownst to the little blighters Scientists are developing stronger deterrents. You would think the hot weather would control them but they just keep on keeping on.
Thanks Merryl for the information. I hope you are right about new means of controlling rabbits.
I am no expert on these things and my observations are limited to the areas I travel around but rabbits seem to be more prevalent in some areas than others.
However lets hope they don’t get back to the pre calicivirus numbers.
