Enchanting Gums

River Red Gums are fascinating trees that seem to change characteristics with different light conditions.

Their trunks, branches and bark work shadows and light in countless ways……..their foliage streaming light in a kaleidoscope of patterns.

A Gold Rush

I was asked to find and shoot some pictures of an acacia that was unusual and had not been seen in the northern Flinders Ranges for many years.

The bush, thought to be acacia bechlerii (no common named, it seems) wasn’t hard to find. It had exceptionally large flower heads ( the golden balls associated with most acacias) and was growing on the highest parts of the mountain tops.

Clearly the good rains of a year or more have regenerated this species with its quite spectacular flower.

A terribly overcast day to take the shots, so on the last of these images I used a flash and diffuser with just enough power to light the flowers and the leaves without illuminating the surrounding rocks and grasses.

Deadwood

One of the many Acacias or Wattles which are some of the hardiest species in this harsh country.

Just a tangled skeleton now, stripped of foliage and life by long years without rain.

Panorama

It’s unfortunate panorama images like this get so compressed on the web.

This was one of the shots taken for the 6 metre wide panorama project early this year that did not get used.

Rainbows the Next…….

There wasn’t a lot of time to get this shot at the Arkaroola Village. It was hand held with mostly the settings in the camera that were there when I grabbed it from the case. The ISO was cranked up to the maximum because of the fast fading light.

This one was shot on a tripod with a little more preparation time.

Colourful Characters

It’s once a year thing…strange looking old motorcars, even stranger looking characters.

Bush bashes have become a regular occurrence in the Outback but our local one, the Variety Club Bash does good things for children growing up with disability, serious illness or who are disadvantaged.

People who follow the Sentimental Bloke in other parts of the world may not know what a Bush Bash is.

Briefly its an eight day, let your hair down, drive in the bush (Outback) with your mates in cars which are over 30 years old.

The participants have raised a lot of money for the children’s cause and its a sort of travelling fancy dress thank you party.

Morning – Patawarta Hill

The old shearers quarters on Angorichina Station, near the town of Blinman in the central Flinders Ranges.

The Patawarta Hill in the background was first first brought to prominence by renown painter, Hans Heysen in his work “Land of the Oratunga, a water colour painted in 1932.
