A Favorite

The Nepowie Range – an unusual formation partly on the Gammon Ranges National Park, partly on Wooltana Station.

Part of the northern Flinders Ranges in the background.

A lucky shot after quite a few mornings of dull skies and long drives.

The light lasted about five minutes.

It is a pity there’s not the facility here to make these shots full screen.

It is much more spectacular as an A1 print.

Old Man Emu.

Two fascinating things about about Emus:

With a brain the size of a pea in a body that big, anything can happen.

The female is definitely smarter. After the courtship and the mating she lays the eggs, then shoots through to find another mate.

He’s left holding the baby – literally – half a dozen or so who hang around until they’re almost as big as him.

Just Add Water

There’s been a bit of scattered rain around lately that has brought mixed fortunes over a lot of South Australia’s Outback.

Some were good falls – other places almost missed out.

There are some areas that are still isolated with many outback dirt roads and tracks closed.

This section of the Arkaroola Creek down from Barrarina Gorge is accessible by foot but like many other places, vehicle access is not an option.

Still, all the waterholes of the creek are full once again – well worth visiting in the coming months.

Hot on the Trail

Sometimes a picture can be deceiving, like this one.

I was looking after these horses and some cattle in the northern Flinders Ranges last summer. I just had to make sure the water was OK and feed them a bale of hay every second day.

It’s first light and horses are coming in for the hay.

What the picture isn’t telling you is that it’s the middle of a heat wave. Every day it’s been 50 degrees Celsius and at night it only managed to get as low as 37 degrees.

The golden rays of the morning sun are hiding all that.

These horses are generally pretty frisky. I suppose their demeanor is the only clue.

St Valentine’s Day

(warning – blatant commercial plug following).

Here’s a print every cool dude needs to give his lady-love on St
Valentine’s Day. Two galahs sitting in a tree smooching.

I’ve been told galahs are some of the horniest birds around.

That’s got nothing to do with St Valentine who apparently married
people who needed a bit of assistance for one reason or another.

A far cry from the current commercial humbug.

Good news though.

I’m coming back as a galah, although some would
suggest I’ve been one for years.

Summer Rains

There’s been widespread rain throughout the country in the last 24 hours or so. Creeks are running and tanks are full.

It’s not without some slight inconveniences though.

But nobody is complaining except one poor bloke whose four wheel drive was swept down a creek and he broke his leg
